Marlin lived 5 doors down the street from me, and was my friend. No one deserves to go the way he did. He was a good kid. Not loud or very rebellious, (like some of us) but just a good kid. He was quiet and pretty much kept to himself. I miss him.

This was truly sad. Although not a good friend, Marlin was a nice kid and I remember when he didn't show up for English one day. The teacher was called out and came back in tears telling us that his mother had shot him the night before while he was studying. The Class of '73 had more than our share of rude wake-up events as we moved our way through high school.

We must have shared a class together or were friends because I remember him as a nice guy with a great personality. Of all those who have passed.....I remember and can picture him clearly.

I lived just a couple doors down(and across the street) from Marlon(as well as Lou Wood).  He and I, along with Johnny Sheehan, Paul and Greg Newsome, Jeff Sheehan(when we would let him play -- he was younger!) , Lou Wood, and Keith Duffy, would play street football on Ramblewood.  Marlon was played a lot, and he was a good player.  I remember the day he died, his mom called him in for dinner, it was a grey, cloudy day, one of those moist, overcast days in Houston that seems to have ominous overtones.

Later that evening,  Amy Heiser came to the door to get my dad, sent by her own father, who was already on the scene(both our dads were docs).  Amy said something about needing to see my dad, and my sister Linda made some sort of joke, and Amy broke into tears, saying there had been an "emergency at the Geiger's house, and she needed my dad over there NOW!

The rest of it was just so sad, so senseless, and I think of Marlon often.  When my mother passed in February of 2015, I was in Houston for her funeral, and I tried to get into Westchester, to the open area which has now been closed off to visitors.  Inside, in that center "mall" area, there is a plaque, which I believe has not only Marlon's name, but also my sister Linda's, from when she passed in July 1976.  I was unable to see it, and that made me a sad.  I understand the reasoning for closing off the school, the way things are now, but still I was sorry I could not see it.

I think of you often Marlon, may you rest in peace!

Lou Wood, if you read this, I'd love to hear from you!

Sincerely,

Gene Schillaci
