Lincoln, Texas couple killed in crash as car hydroplanes

Vehicles collide during rainstorm on Hwy. 21

A Lincoln couple died in a tragic accident when their vehicle hydroplaned on the wet roadway during a rainstorm and collided with a pickup on Sunday morning.  The two-vehicle wreck occurred at 9:35 a.m. on Hwy. 21 near the intersection with County Road 114 between Lincoln and Dime Box, about 9 miles northeast of Giddings.

Michael Joseph Martin, 67, and his wife Diane Elaine Martin, 65, were pronounced deceased at the scene of the collision by Pct. 4 Justice of the Peace Danita Smith. Michael, the brother of Giddings Chamber of Commerce Tourism Director Kelita Thomas, was driving a gray 2015 Honda Accord eastbound on Hwy. 21.

The Honda was observed hydroplaning on the highway during a heavy rain, and it crossed the center stripe into the opposite lanes of travel, said DPS Trooper Patrick Mladenka of Fayette County.

A silver 2020 Dodge Ram pickup being driven westbound on Hwy. 21 by Carlos Rodigo Zavala of Jewett struck the driver’s side of the Honda, according to the trooper.  Zavala, 63, and a 59-year-old passenger, Carol Ann Hubbard of Elgin, were transported to Dell Seton Medical Center in Austin with non-life threatening injuries.

Giddings, Lincoln, and Dime Box volunteer firemen were called to the scene to help with the rescue mission. They also helped with providing traffic control.  The drivers and passengers in both of the vehicles were reportedly wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash.

A LINCOLN COUPLE lost their lives when their 2015 Honda Accord sedan hydroplaned during a rainstorm and crashed into an oncoming pickup on Hwy. 21 near County Road 114 on Sunday at 9:35 a.m. The driver, Michael Martin, and his wife Diane were pronounced deceased at the scene of the accident.

MAJOR DAMAGE -- This silver 2020 Dodge Ram pickup was demolished when it collided with an oncoming car during a rainstorm on Hwy. 21 near County Road 114 on Sunday at 9:35 a.m. The driver and passenger of the truck were taken to Dell Seton Medical Center in Austin with non life-threatening injuries. The driver and passenger of the other vehicle, Michael and Diane Martin of Lincoln, were pronounced deceased at the scene.
