David Allan Smith, Westchester class of 1975, died on January 25, 2022 at the age of 64. Smitty and I were best friends for 50 years. I am going to miss him a great deal. He was part of the great migration of Exxon employee families from New Jersey in the late 60’s and early 70’s. He was born in New York City. He lived in Richmond, until his death.

Along with Dan O’Connell, the three of us had a blast while doing our jobs for the Wildcat football program, all four years at WHS. For our Junior and Senior years, Dan was Head Equipment Manager, Smitty was Asst Equipment Manager, and I was Head Trainer. We dodged more swats than we got. Smitty and I were running buddies. Whether it was kikker dancing or going to a strip joint, we did it together. He had the more outgoing personality, than I.

Smitty worked in fast food joints, during high school. He graduated from SFA and he was a damn fine restaurant manager. He left the restaurant industry to become the Seafood Manager for various HEB stores, until his death.

He died from cardiac arrest and Covid. He had already received two jabs and was negative on January 8, but still had bronchitis-like symptoms a week later. He wasn’t a person to go to a doctor, unless he had to. The big dummy. I’ve known and loved the Smith family for one year less than Smitty. Mr. & Mrs. Smitty, Nancy, and Steve. All four of them survive Smitty. Also Smitty’s wife, Tiffani, she, too, a Wildcat, and their daughter Caitlin. He was to become a grandfather in late April. He died so soon. He was a believer in Jesus Christ and I look forward to re-uniting with him, when my card is punched as well. I will always have the wonderful fragrance of memories of being Smitty’s best friend.

Goodbye, my dear friend.

Doug Spence

Remember Smitty well, and anyone who played football at Westchester did.  He was always upbeat, positive and seemed genuinely happy to be talking with you, or anyone he met.  He was a pleasure to be around and will be missed.

While I was much younger, I knew David through his parents frequenting Wachel's Exxon where his brother Steve and I worked. Remember great times at the Smith house hanging with David and Steve. Getting "freebees" from him when going to Spoons off Gessner. And a memorable time when visiting him up at SFA. I did not know him as well as others, but the few times got to spend with him it was always a fun wild time.

I did not know either David or Doug, but found it interesting that I have same birthday as the deceased class member.  Unfortunately, I knew very few men in our class.   Sorry to hear this man died.

David and I shared the same homeroom at Westchester. He was a good friend and great guy. I remember we both worked at York Steak House in Memorial City during the summer of our senior year. It was nice to work with a friend. Later in years our paths crossed once again when he managed the seafood department at the Bear Creek HEB. It was nice seeing him there weekly. I am so sorry to hear of his passing and wish to share my sympathy with his family.
