RIP Steve Coffman

Storied disc jockey Steve Coffman died Monday afternoon (5/8/06) in Victoria after a battle with a form of stomach cancer that has a very long name. Coffman did go down swinging.

Here’s the official, updated obituary, with visitation and funeral details, from the Victoria Advocate Web site.

Unfortunately, obits, official and otherwise, rarely do justice to the subject. Coffman was a character. He also was a radio pro who never gave up on the belief that a “Texas Mix” format, a mixture of blues, country, country/rock, singer/songwriter, rock ‘n’ roll and even zydeco and reggae musics, will appeal to an array of listeners, listeners of commercial radio.

Coffman was correct. In the ’80s and ’90s, Coffman worked for various radio stations in San Antonio — KZEP, the S.A. edition of KFAN, KENS-AM, KRIO. At each he tried his mix. At each he didn’t succeed, for various reasons, many, if not most, beyond his control. At each, though, he did his best to spin Stevie Ray Vaughan, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Marcia Ball, Buckwheat Zydeco, Robert Earl Keen, Muddy Waters and on and on. At each he built a loyal following.

The format, which, on an international level, is now known as Americana (though zydeco, reggae, unless Willie Nelson is involved, and most blues is anathema to most Americana stations for some reason), has caught on. It’s not knocking hip-hop, watered-down country and homogenized pop, rock and R&B off the charts, but Americana is making inroads.

Coffman chased his dream and wound up in Victoria, at KTXN, with “The Texas Mix.” It was a success from downbeat.

The station’s Web site has an excellent tribute collage: http://www.texasmix.com/

Those among us who knew Coffman know he never met a camera he didn’t like, so there are a ton of photos. Coffman also liked Corona, live music and a good party in a crowded bar. Hey, baby, here’s to you. Have fun spinning discs with Wolfman Jack, the Big Bopper and Poppa Stoppa.
