Clay was among the elite group of debaters in the years when Jim Hull was the debate coach, and the squad routinely cleaned up at tournaments. He teamed usually with Stan Doty of the class of '71, and behind only Tom Rollins and Larry Dickson were the most decorated team among the "men." He went to Georgetown on a scholarship and had intended to pursue debate in the university world, but it was the rebellious mid-Seventies, and he dropped out and moved to Austin for an alternative lifestyle. I don't think the year posted here is correct because I remember talking with some Westchester alums in Austin in the Seventies after it happened. He was murdered in Austin by some thugs. Clay was funny and kind, always friendly to younger debaters and a terribly decent guy.
Larry passed away in California under his nom de plume, Nick West.
I remember Clay - he pulled my hair in geometry class one day, and I apologise for hitting him back. Sorry, Clay... and for the trouble we got into. Thanks for the tribute, James. Our hearts and our fond memories are where our friends carry on.
