Coach Charles S. Dexter

June 3, 1929 - February 2, 2006

Coach Dexter was the first Head Coach of Westchester High School.

CHARLES S. DEXTER, born on June 3, 1929, passed away Thursday, February 2, 2006. Charles was born in Lake Port, New Hampshire to Henry and Martha Dexter.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jane Alexander Dexter, daughters, Karen Dexter, Terri Major and husband Mark; son, Mike Dexter and wife Blanca; grandsons, Josh Robertson, Brian Dexter and wife, Ashley, Charles G. Dexter and wife Kelly.

He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, a dedicated coach and teacher who touched and positively influenced many young lives for more than 50 years. He was a graduate from East Texas State University with a Masters Degree in Education. Charles was currently retired after more than 40 years with the Spring Branch ISD. He was a member of the Texas Coaches Association for his entire career.

A celebration of Charles's life will be held at 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 7, 2006 in the Waltrip Chapel, Reverend Richard Laster, officiating. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be directed to the Alzheimers Association, 2909 W. Holcombe Blvd., Houston, TX 77025, in Charles' memory.

 Coach Dexter left a wonderful heritage for all of the students that had the opportunity to work with/under him. I pray that his family be comforted knowing that he touched and shaped so many lives in a special way as he shared his time with us.

I am extremly greatful for the time and interest Coach Dexter took in me during high school at Westchester. My father past away while I was in 8th grade and if it weren't for football and the staff at Westchester, no telling what might have happened to me. Anyway, I did go to college and received my degree in education and actually work ,Coaching, at Spring Branch for three years before realizing my calling in the Coiunstruction Industy. I will always remember, with great fondness, my years at Westchester, largly because of my football experience and the great life long friends we made. Thanks, Coach

I moved to Houston during the summer of my junior year in high school. During the preceding Spring, we visited various high schools in preparation for our move. When I appeared in the coaches office, Coach Dexter stopped working, and spent around 30 minutes talking to me and selling the Westchester program. That contact made my decision. I came to Westchester and played my remaining two years for Coach Dexter. I enjoyed my time with him. He was a good coach, and more importantly, a good man who was liked and respected by his players. The lessons learned stayed with me through my college experience and now in my professional life. I appreciate his contributions to my education and time at Westchester.

Sorry to hear about Coach Dexter, I remember him well as he once tried to recruit me for the football team in 1968. May God be with him. My prayers go out to him, his friends and family. What a dedicated person he was. (Westchester Class of '68)

A great friend and a pleasure to work with in those wonderful early seventies. We were family, and were united as such. Those were great times for students as well as teachers. I went to Westchester Hi from 1969 - 1973. It was a most memorable experience to play for Coach Dexter. I will always remember his dedication to the team and to his desire to leave the players with an understanding of the importance of hard work and team work.
