I remember Margie, although I didn't know her well.  I was in the class of 71, a year behind her.  I didn't even know she was ill.  She came from a large family.  She was liked by everyone.  Her death hit me hard.  She is buried in the same cemetery as my father.  When we go by to see my dad's grave I always remember Margie and look for her grave, too.  Margie was a sweet child.  She died much, much too young.

Margie was my friend.  She lived at the end of my street, Fawnlake..She was poisoned  by walking on some grass barefoot. Some type of deadly chemical had  been used on their grass.  I remember being so sad.  Margie had red hair and freckles...................Debbie Olive Williams

My sister did die on March 31, 1969.  She did not die from walking barefoot in the the grass but from a blood disease called Aplastic Anemia.  Thank you for your kind comments.

Wonderful, beautiful, so full of joy, I was shocked to hear of her passing, seemed so quick, she was so young and beautiful. Thought of her many times over the years.

Margie was always - and still remains in my memory - an ebullient, bright light who never knew a stranger. I still remember her at the helm of her orange & white WIldcat vintage car that we could HEAR coming before we SAW it....AH-OOG-AH! AH-OOG-AH! I recall all of her fellow Wranglerettes in the girls' locker room signing a giant get well card that Sue Stanbery-Abrams (Class of 1971) bought for Margie when Margie was in the hospital. It was in the shape of a fire-hydrant and said on the inside, "We're all pluggin' for you!" And then - seemingly in a twinkling - Margie was gone. I remember her funeral service as if it were yesterday. Of course all of us Wranglererettes were inconsolable.....and the priest who officiated at Margie's funeral service invited us to imagine how happy we would be for Margie had she been spirited away to marry a prince from a faraway land (This was 1969...more than a decade before Prince Charles married Diana and Prince Andrew married Sarah and in many ways the women's movement hadn't yet made its presence felt at Westchester High School so marrying a prince still sounded like a pretty desirable future to many of us suburban gals.) ......that, yes, we would still miss Margie, but we would be happy for her. And he said that Margie going to be with God was like being swept off her feet by a prince and carried to a wonderful paradise we can not see from where we are. Like Princess Di, Margie, too, was taken from our world far too soon.....

My recollection was that she had passed from a form of leukemia, so I'm grateful for Margie's sister clarifying her cause of death. As a foreigner in the school district, I was devastated when Margie passed because she was truly kind and accepting...gentlity that was not easily found by foreigners in those days. Her gentle smile and sparkling eyes brought me comfort and helped me persevere until I found a place that welcomed me. Margie was an example of tenderness and love, an example everyone can follow.

My fondest memories of Margie were in our Bendwood Elementary days. She was a friendly, happy and energetic person. I also remember that when we had Field Days, she was always the fastest girl, and Charlie Barnes was always the fastest guy. She was a solid part of my growing up years.

Margie was a friend to everyone at Westchester, and we were all so sad to lose her! A thing many of us found disturbing was the big photo of Margie on page 226 of the 1969 Miacis yearbook. The photo shows her sleeping  with her head down on a table. The caption says: "Margie Atwood exhibits her sparkling personality." Ouch..

Those who asked the staff were told that the book was already finished and sent to the printers when Margie passed away, so they couldn't change it. I've looked through my copy, and can't find a printing date anywhere in it.. but I don't think I'm the only one who wondered why they couldn't at least have added an explanation (apology!) in the back of the book with the ads (which include one with a nice photo of Margie).. but I suppose that this just goes along with the mispelling of the yearbook name on page 1 ("MIACHIS")...

All the same- great memories of Margie, and many other Westchester friends!

Tina (Town) Facer, class of 1970.
